Dexter Show Summary
Dexter is a crime based drama series that premiered on the Showtime Cannel on 1st October 2006. The series is based on the novels Darkly Dreaming Dexter, Dearly Devoted Dexter and Dexter in the Dark which were written by Jeff Lindsay. The television adaptation has been developed by Emmy Award winner James Manos, Jr. The executive producers of the series are Michael C. Hall, Clyde Phillips, Sara Colleton, John Goldwyn, Daniel Cerone and Charles H. Eglee. The series has already completed three successful seasons and has aired a total of thirty six episodes till date. The series has been renewed for a fourth season which is supposed to start airing later this year.
The plot of Dexter follows the life Dexter Morgan, who works with the Miami Metro Police Department. He is assigned to the forensic department where he works as a bloodstain pattern analyst. He comes across as the perfect guy who is the main support for his sister Debra. In addition, he has a steady girlfriend Rita whose two children look up to him and find him to be a very adorable person. Although everything seems perfectly fine, Dexter hides a very dark and gruesome secret behind his cool and composed exterior.
Unknown to his employers and loved ones, Dexter is a monstrous serial killer and psychopath who splashes blood across the streets of Miami at night. However, he is different from other serial killers in that he is quite disciplined and kills with a purpose. He religiously follows the code inculcated in him by his foster father Harry and only kills people who truly deserve it. He pursues only those people who have escaped justice. He hunts down such people during the day and in order to make sure that they don’t get away with another crime, kills them at night with elaborate planning so that he can not in any way be associated with the crime.
Set in Miami, the television series is quite different from the novels on which it is based not only due to the addition of many extra subplots but also due to the rearrangements and modifications made to the source material. Dexter was received with quite a positive response by the audiences and according to a survey it was the third–best viewed series during the fall of 2006. The series continues to be one of the most popular shows on television due to its ability to maintain its high standards. The series has been nominated for thirty seven different awards including four Golden Globes and six Emmy Awards. It has also won fourteen other awards including two Emmy Awards.
